Understanding Seed Treatment: Fungicides & Insecticides

Seed treatment has many benefits. But what’s in it? And how exactly does it work? At UAS, our seed treatments are fully customizable with an array of fungicides, insecticides, polymers, colorant and other enhancements. Learn a little about what fungicides and insecticides are and how they work below.

FUNGICIDES

Fungicides kill fungi by damaging their cell membranes, inactivating critical enzymes or proteins, or by interfering with key processes such as energy production or respiration. Here are some popular fungicides UAS strategically uses in our treatments.

AZOXYSTROBIN

Azoxystrobin is a broad spectrum, preventative seed treatment fungicide with systemic properties recommended for the control of many seed-borne and soil-borne pathogens that cause seed decay, seedling blight, and damping-off.

MAIN TARGET DISEASE: Rhizoctonia

OTHER TARGETS:

  • Pythium

  • Fusarium

  • White mold

  • Brown spot

  • Phomopsis

While metalaxyl fungicides are the leading pythium fungicides on the market, azoxystrobin provides an added boost. Plus, not only does it add to the pythium control, it increases activity on other fungi too—like rhizoctonia, fusarium and suppression of white mold (sclerotium), and more.

Anchor™ (Mefenoxam®)

Anchor™ 3L ST (Mefenoxam®) is a fungicide that disrupts the synthesis of nucleic acids in fungi. It targets pathogens like pythium and phytophthora that rot roots, stems and leaves, as well as down mildews that blight foliage and defoliate plants. Plus, it’s a systemic fungicide. Following seed germination, it moves primarily upward and outward within the plant, providing comprehensive protection for several weeks.

MAIN TARGET DISEASE: Pythium, Phytophthora

ACE™ (IPCONAZOLE)

Ace™ is a broad-spectrum disease protection of ipconazole, providing enhanced protection on both soil- and seed-borne diseases in corn, soybeans, cereals and other crops. It employs the same active ingredient found in Rancona® 3.8 FS—now in a post-patent offering to improve profit per acre.

Ace™ exerts its effect by inhibiting sterol synthesis in fungi. With a highly systemic, low-use rate formulation, Ace™ delivers maximum effectiveness at a minimal rate—enhancing the value of your entire treatment blend.

MAIN TARGET DISEASE: Rhizoctonia, Fusarium, Seed Decay Fungi

THIABENDAZOLE (TBZ)

Thiabendazole is a systemic fungicide that controls diseases that cause seed decay, stem blight, stem rot, root rot, seedling wilt, damping-off and other seedling diseases. Thiabendazole is shown to improve germination and early season seedling health.

MAIN TARGET DISEASES: Fusarium, Phomopsis

OTHER TARGETS:

  • Rhizoctonia

  • White Mold

  • Sudden Death Syndrome

T-METHYL (THIOPHANATE-METHYL)

T-Methyl has protectant, systemic and curative actions—each specific to certain crops, fungi and climatic conditions. T-Methyl controls high rates of rhizoctonia root rot, seed decay fungi, junk fungi, seedling blight and seed-borne white mold and gray mold. It can also enhance the effectiveness of other fungicides when used together.

MAIN TARGET DISEASES: Rhizoctonia, Pythium, Phytophthora

OTHER TARGETS:

  • White mold

  • Powdery mildew

  • Rusts

  • Brown spot

  • Brown rot

  • Fusarium

FLUDIOXONIL

Fludioxonil is a broad-spectrum fungicide that protects early-season seeds against a wide range of diseases with effective disease control. It moves up and down in the plant system, providing systemic protection.

MAIN TARGET DISEASES: Fusarium, Rhizoctonia

OTHER TARGETS:

  • Aspergillus

  • Penicillium

  • Alternaria

INSECTICIDES

Insecticides are formulated to kill, harm, repel or mitigate one or more species of insect. Insecticides work in different ways—some disrupt the nervous system, whereas others may damage insect exoskeletons, repel them or control them by some other means. Here are some popular insecticides UAS strategically uses in our treatments.

LEGEND™ (THIAMETHOXAM)

Legend™ (Thiamethoxam) is a broad-spectrum insecticide developed specifically to deliver enhanced handling, stability, performance and value when used in custom seed treatment blends. It thwarts pests by interfering with receptors in the insect’s nervous system. Once an insect encounters it, feeding is impacted immediately, reducing any additional damage.

Legend™ targets insects at both soil and foliar levels that can diminish plant vigor and curtail yields. Below ground, it binds to soil material around the roots and remains in the root zone—acting as a reservoir before root uptake through the soil. Above ground, it offers significant foliar insect protection. The impact of the insecticide can be seen through increased root mass, greater stands, earlier canopies and taller, greener plants.

MAIN TARGET INSECTS:

  • Seed Corn Maggots

  • Aphids

  • Bean Leaf Beetle

  • Wireworms

  • Thrips,

  • White Grubs

IMIDACLOPRID

Imidacloprid is an insecticide used to provide post-planting residual control of sucking insects and soil-insects during the germination stage of plant growth. When ingested, it binds to the receptors of insect nerve cells, damaging their nervous system and eventually killing them. As an added perk, when formulated in seed treatment, it also reduces dust off.

MAIN TARGET INSECTS:

  • Seed Corn Maggots

  • Aphids

  • Bean Leaf Beetle

  • Wireworms

  • Thrips,

  • White Grubs

BIOST NEMATICIDE

While mainly used to control nematodes, nematicide can also be an insecticide when applied at a lower use rate. BioST Nematicide is a broad-spectrum nematicide that does more than repel pests—it destroys them. A distinct combination of enzymes and toxins defends seeds from the start—and stays in the root zone as the seeds grow for up to 75 days.

MAIN TARGET DISEASES: Nematodes

OTHER TARGETS:

  • Wireworms

  • Seed Corn Maggots

  • Corn Rootworms
